Frequently asked questions
1. Is it true that Gerhart Hauptmann received the Nobel Prize for his play ‘The Weavers’?
The writer received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his dramatic works prior to 1912, but of course the play ‘The Weavers’ was also taken into consideration.
2. Where did the writer get the money to build such a magnificent villa?
Gerhart Hauptmann’s plays were staged in many theatres at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The royalties allowed the writer to lead a comfortable life.
3. Did Gerhart Hauptmann sympathise with the Nazi regime?
No. It cannot be said that the writer sympathised with the Nazi regime. His attitude was opportunistic (and he was criticised for this). He did not declare himself an open supporter of the Third Reich. After 1933, he wrote ancient tragedies, avoiding references to contemporary events. In 1945, he was willing to cooperate with the Soviet Union.
4. Was Gerhart Hauptmann anti-Semitic?
Hauptmann’s relations with Jews were not always unambiguous. However, the writer had connections with Jewish cultural circles and had Jewish friends, some of whom supported him financially. Hauptmann’s public statements and political views were sometimes perceived as anti-Semitic. However, they should be treated with careful consideration of the context of the time.
5. Do Polish theatres stage Hauptmann’s plays?
They staged and continue to stage plays. Polish theatres have produced some outstanding performances, such as the unforgettable staging of Hanusia, directed by Tadeusz Pawlikowski in Krakow in 1895. Hanusia was played by Pola Negri herself at the Teatr Mały in Warsaw in 1913, although at that time she was still using her maiden name. Most recently, in 2025, the Stanisław Wyspiański Silesian Theatre in Katowice staged Tko-czy, directed by Maja Kleczewska.
6. Did Gerhart Hauptmann also write operas?
No. However, Krzysztof Penderecki composed the music for the opera The Black Mask (premiered in 1986) based on Gerhart Hauptmann’s one-act play Die schwarze Maske (1928).
7. Which of Hauptmann’s plays were performed in Jelenia Góra?
The Black Mask was staged in Jelenia Góra (contemporary). In 1942, at the Municipal Theatre, Woźnica Henschel (Henschel the Coachman) was performed by amateurs from Jagniątków (then Agnetendorf).
